Somewhere along the way you picked up a belief: that the first role has to be free. A charity trusteeship. A favour for a former colleague’s business. A few months pro bono to “build a track record” before anyone will pay you.

Builder Stage: Usually mid-40s to mid-50s. You have a significant runway and the energy to build.

Income target: ÂŁ150,000-ÂŁ300,000+

Anchor Role: ÂŁ5,000-ÂŁ10,000/month fractional or advisory retainer.

Mindset: Stimulation, variety, commercial upside. You don't want to retire... you want to build.

Bridger

Bridger Stage: Mid-50s to mid-60s. Mortgage paid, pension in place and financial pressure off.

Goal: A focused portfolio that gives you impact, stimulation and time on your terms.

Portfolio shape: 2-3 substantial engagements. Quality over volume.

Income target: ÂŁ40,000-ÂŁ100,000

Anchor Role: ÂŁ2,000-ÂŁ3,000/month advisory retainer.

Mindset: Stay in the game. Contribute what you've learned while getting your evenings back.

Meet Adrian Knight

I’ve spent nearly 11 years helping senior executives transition from corporate careers into portfolio careers that give them control, income and purpose.

I’ve worked with founders and business owners across the UK, connecting ambitious SMEs with the right board-level talent. I know what these business owners need, what they’re willing to pay for and how to position yourself as the obvious choice.

Over the last 18 months, I’ve built SME Non-Exec from scratch into a community of 35+ executives who are actively building portfolio careers with fast-growth SMEs - securing NED seats, advisory roles, consulting engagements and fractional leadership positions.
