The Hidden SME NED Market: 4 Insights to Find Your Next Board Appointment

Adrian Knight explaining hidden SME NED market networks during Non-Executive Director workshop

Are you fishing in the same crowded waters as everyone else when searching for NED roles? Many experienced executives spend months - even years - searching through traditional channels only to come up empty-handed.

Beyond Traditional Board Appointment Channels

The traditional approach to finding Non-Executive Director positions often leads to disappointment. Job boards offer sparse opportunities, while expensive network subscriptions are saturated with highly qualified executives competing for the occasional role.

One former finance director spent over £1,500 on premium NED network subscriptions that delivered exactly zero suitable opportunities. Another operations executive applied to 27 advertised positions over six months without progressing beyond initial screening.

This "follow the conventional path" approach is concerning, especially when the most valuable SME board opportunities are rarely advertised through traditional channels.

Let's explore four crucial insights to help you navigate the hidden SME NED market and find lucrative roles that most executives don't even know exist.

Insight 1: The SME NED Appointment Process Happens in Shadow Networks

It's a persistent misconception that SME board appointments follow the same structured process as executive recruitment or large company board appointments.

In reality, the vast majority of Non-Executive Director roles in small and medium enterprises happen through personal connections, trusted referrals and networks that most executives never tap into.

SME owners don't want to advertise board positions and sift through hundreds of applications. They want pre-vetted, trusted individuals recommended by people they already know.

Your decades of operational experience and industry knowledge remain invisible unless you access these shadow networks. Instead of spending hours on job boards or paying for expensive listing services, focus on building relationships in the ecosystems where SME owners and their advisors actually congregate.

Insight 2: SME Owners Recruit Through Trusted Networks, Not Recruitment Channels

When an SME owner decides they need board-level expertise, they don't think in terms of "recruiting a NED." They think about finding someone who can help solve their specific challenges.

As an investor with a portfolio of companies, I've appointed multiple NEDs over the years. Not once have I placed a job advert, engaged a recruitment firm or posted an appointment on a "NED network." Instead, I've relied on my network to find people with the right expertise and approached them directly.

This pattern repeats across the SME landscape. Business owners want someone who understands their world - someone recommended by people they trust.

SME owners typically describe their challenges to their trusted circle, which might include:

  • Other business owners facing similar challenges
  • Their accountant or financial advisor
  • Business groups or masterminds they belong to
  • Industry peers who've successfully navigated similar growth stages
  • Investors or funding partners with a stake in their success

This is why simply having the right expertise isn't enough for securing board roles. You need to be visible and connected in the ecosystems where these conversations happen.

Insight 3: SME Investor Networks Constantly Seek Sector Experts for Their Portfolios

The investment community supporting SMEs - from angel investors to private equity firms - represents one of the richest sources of board opportunities that never reach the open market.

These investors regularly appoint Non-Executive Directors to their portfolio companies to protect and grow their investments. One PE partner puts it bluntly: "We're always looking for operators who've been there, done that and can help our portfolio companies avoid costly mistakes."

A technology executive secured two paid NED appointments after developing relationships with just one regional investor group. They valued his expertise in scaling B2B SaaS businesses - exactly what several portfolio companies needed.

Instead of waiting for these opportunities to be advertised (they rarely are), identify investment firms in your sector and engage directly with their partners and portfolio managers to find board positions.

Insight 4: Sector Communities Value Expertise More Than Governance Credentials

Sector-specific business communities and industry bodies represent fertile ground for developing board opportunities - if you position yourself correctly.

SME owners don't connect with generic "board advisors." They don't care about corporate governance qualifications or certifications. They connect with experts who deeply understand the specific challenges they face in their industry.

A close friend who sits on three SME boards in the education sector shared: "None of these opportunities came through formal channels. They all came from being active in networks, clear positioning and becoming known as someone who understands the sector's unique challenges."

Instead of trying to be all things to all businesses, establish yourself as a go-to expert in specific sectors where you have genuine expertise and connections to secure SME NED roles.

Accessing the Hidden SME Board Opportunity Market

The most valuable SME board opportunities rarely appear on job boards, headhunter lists or expensive NED networks. They circulate privately among trusted relationships, often filled before most qualified candidates even hear about them.

Business owners find their board members through conversations with peers, introductions from trusted sources and direct approaches to experts they've encountered in their business journey.

This isn't to say traditional appointment channels have no place in your strategy. Some executives do secure suitable roles this way, particularly with larger SMEs or those with institutional investors who follow more structured processes.

I'm simply urging you not to limit yourself to these visible but often less fruitful channels when the richest opportunities flow through networks that most executives never tap into.
